Come And See |
ADD TO YOUR FAITH (Part 1 & 2) INTRODUCTION. 1. At a time when Peter wrote to those of “like precious faith” (II Peter 1:1), he tells them how to increase their faith and add those spiritual aspects to their life that are needed to grow in Christ. 2. These are not optional things for Christians to obtain, but necessities if we want to obtain the promises that were addressed in this mornings lesson (II Peter 1:3-4). 3. Look at the term that Peter felt necessary to use in verses 5 and 10, about how we should react to these things.
Vines Expository Dictionary 4. It is obvious that we need to be diligent to enter into that everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ because Peter said we could fall without these things in our lives. 5. Let us therefore, consider these things that we might endeavor to add to our faith.
I. ADD TO YOUR FAITH
II. ADD TO YOUR FAITH, VIRTUE.
---If we will fear the Lord and keep His commandments we will be able to live a good moral (virtuous) life. IV. ADD TO VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE ---It is not earthly wisdom that we should desire, but the knowledge of God’s word. ---If we plan on staying strong in the faith and living a godly life, the word of God is the only instruction able to do that. --- “a seeking to know, an inquiry, investigation, especially of spiritual truth” “Moral wisdom as seen in right living.” Vine’s Expository Dictionary.
---If we seek after earthly knowledge, or godly wisdom for the wrong gain,we may get ourselves into trouble.
---It destroyed in the Old Testament and it will do the same today!
V. ADD TO KNOWLEDGE, SELF-CONTROL (Temperance) --- “Strength, temperance, putting our knowledge into practice.”
CONCLUSION 1. In order that we do not fall from the faith, we must add to that faith virtue, and to that virtue knowledge and to that knowledge self-control. 2. It is obvious to see the necessary order of these aspects and the way that each one works with the other. 3. If we forget any one of these things, Peter gives no definite promise of never falling away, but if we will keep them Peter said “you will never fall” 4. Not only did Peter promise that we would never fall, but that we would be given an entrance into the kingdom of God. 5. How many of us want to enter into the kingdom of God? 6. How many want to receive eternal life?
7. It is at this point that our faith begins to grow as we strive diligently to work for the Lord. 8. I would like to repeat the words of Paul in Romans 15:14-15 9. Let us check ourselves in this reminder to see if these things be us and that we are heading in the direction of our home in heaven. WHERE DO YOU STAND TODAY? ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN? IF YOU ARE, ARE YOU GROWING IN THESE THINGS?
“Add To Your Faith...” (2) II Peter 1: 5-10 INTRODUCTION 1. This morning we considered the lesson that Peter taught to those of like precious faith, encouraging them to add to their faith. 2. We saw that we need to add to our faith, virtue (moral goodness), and to virtue, knowledge, and to knowledge self-control (temperance). 3. Tonight we will endeavor to conclude that lesson by looking at the last four things that Peter mentions in this text. 4. Keep in mind that Peter said to diligently seek these things. I. ADD TO SELF-CONTROL, PATIENCE. ---This word is interchangeable with long-suffering, endurance, and abiding under in different circumstances.
II. ADD TO PATIENCE, GODLINESS ---”devout, piety, Godward attitude, reverence manifested in actions, doing what is pleasing to God.”
EXPRESS PROFESS Speech James 3:8-12 Ephesians 4:29
Dress Immodesty I Timothy 2:9-10
Worship Spirit or Truth John 4:24 Spirit and Truth
Lifestyle immoral, defiled I Corinthians 6:19
Master money, sin, etc. Matthew 6:24; Romans 6:14
---It is obvious that we must live according to the claims that we make and that is that of professing and expressing godliness. ---Are we expressing what we are professing? ---Let us all pray for our country (President, School Advisers, Law enforcement agencies etc.) -I Timothy 2:1-3 III. ADD TO GODLINESS, BROTHERLY KINDNESS. --- “good pleasant, goodness of heart, gentleness.”
IV. ADD TO BROTHERLY KINDNESS, LOVE (Charity). --- “Known by the action it prompts, expressed in gifts, obedience, interest. ---What Is Love? I Corinthians 13:1-8
CONCLUSION ---READ II Peter 1:5-11. ---If we do these things, we will never fall nor will we be unfruitful in the Lord’s work. ---Peter states that if we lack these things, we are short sighted (blind), and that we have forgotten our purification from sin through Christ. WHERE DO WE STAND TODAY? ---Peter encourages us with the words: “for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied unto you.” ARE YOU FOLLOWING THE TEACHINGS OF GOD? ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN? DO YOU WANT TO ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD? YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SAVED TODAY?
