Come And See

ADD TO YOUR FAITH (Part 1 & 2)

INTRODUCTION.

1. At a time when Peter wrote to those of “like precious faith” (II Peter 1:1), he tells them how  to increase their faith and add those spiritual aspects to their life that are needed to grow in Christ.

 2. These are not optional things for Christians to obtain, but necessities if we want to obtain the promises that were addressed in this mornings lesson (II Peter 1:3-4).

 3. Look at the term that Peter felt necessary to use in verses 5 and 10, about how we should react to these things.

-DILIGENT “earnestness, carefulness, to hasten to do a thing, to exert oneself, endeavor.”

                                                Vines Expository Dictionary

 4. It is obvious that we need to be diligent to enter into that everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ because Peter said we could fall without these things in our lives.

 5. Let us therefore, consider these things that we might endeavor to add to our faith.

I.  ADD TO YOUR FAITH

A. What is this faith that Peter is addressing?

1. II Peter 1:1

B. What is faith in general?

1.Hebrews 11:1; Romans 8:24-25

2. “A firm conviction based on hearing”.

C. Why is this faith important?

1. Hebrews 11:6.

D. How do we obtain this faith?

1. Romans 10:17.

E. How must we express this faith?

 1. James 2:14-24

II. ADD TO YOUR FAITH, VIRTUE.

A. Virtue Defined: “Moral goodness” This is definitely an essential quality to the exercise of faith.

B. Socrates said “Virtue is the beauty, and vice is the deformity, of the soul."

1. Living a good moral life is what is required to save our soul, but immorality is what will condemn our soul to hellfire... Virtue is needed!

C. This virtue is used many times to describe godly women.

1. Ruth 3:11; Proverbs 12:4; Proverbs 31:10, 30

D. Paul told those at Philippi to think on these things

1. Philippians 4:8

 E. Peter leaves no excuses for no being virtuous.

---If we will fear the Lord and keep His commandments we will be able to live a good moral (virtuous) life.

 IV. ADD TO VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE

---It is not earthly wisdom that we should desire, but the knowledge of God’s word.

---If we plan on staying strong in the faith and living a godly life, the word of God is the only instruction able to do that.

--- “a seeking to know, an inquiry, investigation, especially of spiritual truth” “Moral wisdom as seen in right living.” Vine’s Expository Dictionary.

A. Knowledge is to be acquired.

1. Proverbs 10:14; Proverbs 20:15.

 B. Knowledge can be dangerous.

 1. I Corinthians 8:1

---If we seek after earthly knowledge, or godly wisdom for the wrong gain,we may get ourselves into trouble.

 C. Ignorance will certainly destroy.

---It destroyed in the Old Testament and it will do the same today!

 1. Hosea 4:6; Isaiah 5:13

D. Consider what Paul said about knowledge.

1. Colossians 1:9-12; Ephesians 5:17

V. ADD TO KNOWLEDGE, SELF-CONTROL (Temperance)

--- “Strength, temperance, putting our knowledge into practice.”

A. We must be the controller or we will be controlled.

 1. I Corinthians 9:25-27; Romans 6:16-18

B. We must govern our lives or we may yield to the tyranny of Satan.

1. Proverbs 16:32; James 1:19-20.

CONCLUSION

1. In order that we do not fall from the faith, we must add to that faith virtue, and to that virtue           knowledge and to that knowledge self-control.

2. It is obvious to see the necessary order of these aspects and the way that each one works with the other.

3. If we forget any one of these things, Peter gives no definite promise of never falling away, but if we will keep them Peter said “you will never fall”

4. Not only did Peter promise that we would never fall, but that we would be given an entrance into the kingdom of God.

5. How many of us want to enter into the kingdom of God?

6. How many want to receive eternal life?

HEAR                   Romans 10:17

BELIEVE              John 3:16

REPENT               Luke 13:3,5

CONFESS            Matthew 10:32-33

BAPTIZED           Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38

7. It is at this point that our faith begins to grow as we strive diligently to work for the Lord.

8. I would like to repeat the words of Paul in Romans 15:14-15

9. Let us check ourselves in this reminder to see if these things be us and that we are heading in   the direction of our home in heaven.

 WHERE DO YOU STAND TODAY?

 ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?

IF YOU ARE, ARE YOU GROWING IN THESE THINGS?
